December is Safe Toys and Gifts Month, and seeing as this is one of the busiest shopping weeks of the year, toy safety is a top concerns. It is estimated that about 50% of toys purchased each year are bought between Thanksgiving and Christmas, and many shoppers wait until the last week. That means people are in a hurry and may not make the best choice or pay attention to the appropriate age recommendation on the package.
With the federal toy safety standards passed by Congress in 2008, parents can be more assured that toys and electronics on the shelves are safe, but it is still important to pay attention to your purchase and stay informed about harmful products. We think of young children the most when we think about toy safety, but it is a good reminder that many pre-teens and teenagers can run into issues as well. Make sure to read all instructions and to discuss proper use of the item.
