0 Warding off Winter Weight

With the way winters are in Colorado, paying attention to what you eat and avoiding weight gain can be tricky, even after the holidays. Let’s face it, with the number of snow storms we’ve already had, it is hard to get outside and exercise, and it’s a whole lot easier to stay inside eating comfort foods.

What is a person to do? These 5 tips will help you stay healthy and keep your weight down during the long winter months.
  • Prepare healthy meals for your family: The healthier and lighter the meal, the better you’ll look and feel.
  • Avoid heavy snacks before mealtime: Eating heavy appetizers or snacks before your meal can take you down the path of overfill and more calories than you need. Grab a light, healthy snack if you can’t wait, that way you will have plenty of room left for the meal.
  • Serve one helping and no more: You’ve been cooking all day and can’t wait to dive in. Make sure to eat one serving and save the rest for dinner the next night.
  • Don’t run to the couch after eating: After mealtime, put some dance music on and get your family moving.
  • Exercise 30 minutes to 1 hour each day: Exercising every day will keep your metabolism moving faster. Even if it is too cold or snowy to get outside, come up with an indoor exercise routine and stick to it!
Another way to keep an eye on your health and find out how well you made it through the winter season is to attend a 9Health Fair this spring. With over 150 fairs conveniently scheduled, now is the time to plan to attend in 2012. Our traditional fair dates are April 21-29, but we have additional fairs running as early as March and as late as mid-May. Check 9healthfair.org for a complete list of available screenings including Height/Weight/BMI.
