0 Prostate Cancer Risk Increases with Age

Are you or a loved one male and over 50? Certain conditions increase for men who are 50 and over. Prostate cancer is one of them. According to the American Cancer Society, the risk is even higher for men ages 65 and older, with the most frequent cases being in African-Americans, followed by Caucasians, Hispanics and Native Americans. As the prostate gland grows with age, so does the risk of the three most common conditions: Inflammation (Prostatitis), Enlarged Prostate and Prostate Cancer. Prostate changes that do not lead to cancer can be readily treated and in some cases, cured. You can self-identify some urinary symptoms such as urgency to urinate and decreased urine flow. There seems to be a connection with dietary changes such as large consumption of red meat as well as calcium supplements as some potential culprits; yet, no definite conclusions have been made. Vegetables, on the other hand, including broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage along with tomatoes and legumes may help prevent it. Click here for more information.

With prostate cancer being the most common cancer in men, 9Health Fair recommends they discuss with their doctors the benefits and risks of prostate cancer screening. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention continues to support informed decision making, which encourages men to talk with their doctors to learn the nature and risk of prostate cancer, understand the benefits and risks of the screening tests, and make decisions consistent with their preferences and values. Visit a Fall Family 9Health Fair for your PSA screening, which is recommended for males 40 and over who have a family history of prostate cancer, or all males 50 to 75. Check our website for dates and a location near you. 9Health Fair provides an entry-point to health care and everyone should be able to get follow up care without barriers like lack of insurance or high cost. Getting the care and information you need, when you need it, isn’t too much to ask. Your voice matters, because decisions about health care are too important to be left solely to others.
