Do you know the symptoms of a heart attack? It seems we would know when we are having problems, but many of the symptoms are similar to other, less serious illnesses. So how do we decipher? Especially since not all people who have heart attacks experience the same symptoms or experience them to the same degree. The earliest warning of a heart attack may be recurrent chest pain that's triggered by exertion and relieved by rest.
So what other warning signs should we look for? According to the Mayo Clinic, common heart attack symptoms include:
- Pressure, fullness or a squeezing pain in the center of your chest that goes on for more than a minute or two
- Pain in your shoulder, arm, back, or even in your teeth and jaw
- Increasing occurrences of chest pain
- Pain in the upper abdomen
- Shortness of breath
- Perspiration
- Imminent sense of doom
- Fainting
- Nausea and vomiting
Sometimes the symptoms for women may be different or in additional to the ones above according to the Mayo Clinic. These signs to watch out for include:
- Heartburn or abdominal pain
- Moist skin
- Dizziness
- Abnormal or unexplained fatigue
Paying attention and watching for one, many or all of the above symptoms is the best way to know if there is an oncoming problem. As the #1 killer in the U.S., there are steps you can take to help avert heart problems. The Mayo Clinic has 5 strategies to help prevent heart disease.
One of the strategies includes getting regular health screenings to check blood pressure, cholesterol levels and to check for diabetes. Each of these screenings can all be found at the upcoming spring 9Health Fairs for little or no cost. Our traditional 9 days are April 21st through April 29th, but some start as early as March and run as late as mid-May. Blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes screenings are important as they tell you what your numbers are and whether you need to take action. Find a fair near you to take preventative action against heart disease.
